Fabulous photo! I love the textures, the contrast between square and circular shapes and the colors. I'm amazed by the splashes of color from the sky showing through the old window and over the one wall. Excellent shot.

Thanks. I couldn't tell exactly how the thing worked.  I almost looked like this was driven by a set of ropes or cables from a water wheel closer to the river.

Can't say for sure, but I was wondering if the water wheel was attached to the flat disk on the end with the large bolt holes with the belts that drove the machinery on the large drum.

Upon further research

I've concluded that the water turbine is in the connected building visible here: paulweber.deviantart.com/art/O…  and this disk is connected to the electrical generator (removed).  The strange cylinder is labeled as "sheave" (ie. pully) in the diagram.
